Your cycle and the scale

Why many women see higher readings before a period, and how to keep your trend fair.

By Goldmend Health · 7 November 2026

Many women notice that their weight rises for a few days before their period and falls again afterwards. This is common and usually water, not fat.

Why it happens

Hormone changes across the menstrual cycle affect how much water the body holds. Bloating, cravings and changes in sleep can add to it. The pattern differs from person to person and month to month.

Keeping your trend fair

If you are trying to lose weight

A higher week before your period can feel discouraging. Knowing it is expected helps. Watch the trend over two or three months.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if your periods change a lot, are very painful, or if you notice large or rapid weight changes you cannot explain.
